A bit of sanity from a friend:
Dear Libertarian, Evangelical, and Tea Party friends. I love you. I really do. I agree with you on many issues, And I admire what you are trying to accomplish. Keep pushing. Keep trying to move the needle in the right direction. But on election day, when you go into the voting booth, you have two choices – a Democrat, and a Republican. There may be other names on the ballot, but if they don’t have a reasonable expectation that they will get more than 30% of the vote, they are not a choice but a distraction. If you vote for one of those splinter candidates, you are not going to get them elected and only one of two outcomes are possible. When it is all over, either the Republican or the Democrat will take the oath of office. And your symbolic vote will have an effect which you may not desire.
When you vote, rather than wasting it on a “perfect” candidate, consider the two real options. One of them may only vote with your side 7 or 8 times out of 10. But the other candidate may vote your values 2 or 1 or even 0 times out of 10. If you can’t elect someone who will side with you 10 out of 10 times, you should vote AGAINST the one who will use their vote against you 10 out of 10 times. It still won’t get your dream candidate elected, but it will cancel out a vote by someone who gets their news from Jon Stewart…
