Iran Idiocy

The Obama Administration is insane:

dunce-capThe Obama administration said Monday it’s ready to “quickly” lift sanctions on Iran if the country answers the international community’s concerns about its nuclear program.

The comments on the eve of new negotiations in Geneva are at odds with the position of many lawmakers of both parties in Congress, who want to increase–not decrease–the pressure on Iran.

“We are quite ready to move,” a senior administration official told reporters ahead of the negotiations. “If they’re ready to go, we are ready to go. But it depends on what they put on the table.”

“I think that the core sanctions architecture that not only the United States but the entire international community has put in place…all can be addressed if Iran addresses all of our concerns and all of their obligations and responsibilities under the NPT [Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] and U.N. Security Council resolutions,” the official continued.

Iran is one of only four countries designated as state sponsors of terror by the US Department of State (the others are Cuba, Sudan, and Syria–the latter being essentially an Iranian proxy), and has been so designated since 19-freaking-84.

Here’s a few of Iran’s recent antics. Wikipedia has a list, as well.

So,

  • Iran has been a primary sponsor of world-wide terrorism for many years.
  • Sanctions have not significantly curtailed Iran’s sponsorship of said terrorism.
  • Iran is mere months away from developing nuclear weapons.
  • Iran has repeatedly threatened Israel with extinction.
  • “Death To America” chants are a regular feature of Iranian political pep rallies.

And the Administration’s response is to signal to Iran that “the core sanctions architecture that not only the United States but the entire international community has put in place…all can be addressed if Iran addresses all of our concerns” re nukes?

But what about Iran’s longstanding sponsorship of terrorism? One might reasonable conclude that the “core sanctions architecture” verbiage does not refer only to more recent sanctions prompted by Iran’s nuclear program, but also to sanctions that have been in place since shortly after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. If that was not the intent of the senior administration official’s remarks, no contrary information was provided in The Hill‘s article.

And I won’t even bother to comment on the idiotic sort of “negotiating” tactic that the senior administration official’s comments represent.

Utter lunacy.

Addendum:

I couldn’t help but wonder if I was misreading the senior administration official’s baffling comments, so I asked Ed Morrissey, “Am I missing something here? Hoping I’m misreading the ‘senior administration official’s’ comments.” Ed responded, “They may be assuming linkage. Int’l sanctions mainly deal with the nukes, but some US sanctions deal w/terror separately.”
