The Narcissist In Chief

Timothy P. Carney offers a short but insightful piece on President Obama’s rather alarming prickliness when even mildly challenged.
When one reporter had the temerity to inquire as to the legal basis of Obama’s unilateral decision to ignore statute and delay the Obamacare employer mandate, the President responded:
If Congress thinks that what I’ve done is inappropriate or wrong in some fashion, they’re free to make that case. But there’s not an action that I take that you don’t have some folks in Congress who say that I’m usurping my authority. Some of those folks think I usurp my authority by having the gall to win the presidency.
President Obama’s narcissism has been fairly obvious since before he took office (and notable even in a realm where narcissism is more the rule than the exception), but this is getting a bit creepy.
Even more creepy is reading the Mayo Clinic’s list of narcissistic personality disorder symptoms while placing it in the context of the behavior that Obama has consistently evinced over the course his Presidency:
Believing that you’re better than others
Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness
Exaggerating your achievements or talents
Expecting constant praise and admiration
Believing that you’re special and acting accordingly
Failing to recognize other people’s emotions and feelings
Expecting others to go along with your ideas and plans
Taking advantage of others
Expressing disdain for those you feel are inferior
Being jealous of others
Believing that others are jealous of you
Trouble keeping healthy relationships
Setting unrealistic goals
Being easily hurt and rejected
Having a fragile self-esteem
Appearing as tough-minded or unemotional
As Carney notes:
Got that? Question his legal authority to ignore a law, get called a birther. It’s charming. Dave Weigel at Slate points out that Jay Carney also dodged. As Weigel aptly put it, “None of these were answers. They were expressions of contempt.”
And they were also expressions of President Obama’s self-evident, clinical narcissism.
