Throwing Eric Holder Under the Bus

As previously discussed in my “The ‘I’ Word: Project Gunwalker,” the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has lately been “permitting, encouraging and facilitating ‘straw purchase’ firearm sales to traffickers, and allowing the guns to ‘walk’ and be transported to Mexico” (source). Many of those guns have ended up in the hands of Mexico’s homicidal drug cartels, and some have been seized in connection with crimes committed in the United States.

And what has been the response of the ATF, and of the Department of Justice?

Citing private testimony from the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told Attorney General Eric Holder in a letter dated Tuesday that acting ATF director Kenneth Melson met with the House panel’s staff on July 4 and reported that Justice had concealed information about the operation, including the involvement of the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration.

The operation, Project Gunrunner, has drawn scrutiny amid allegations that, rather than stanch the export of guns from the U.S. to Mexico, it has instead facilitated sales to traffickers. Issa and Grassley are raising the prospect that the purported scandal could have spread much wider and higher than the Obama administration has acknowledged.

As Brit Hume noted:

“This is a real scandal…And once again, we have the classic question of what did the attorney general, for example, know? When did he know it?”

Think Watergate.

Tea Party rock star Allen West summarizes the whole pathetic story nicely:

“This is just another sad chapter in the Eric Holder book of ineptness and incompetence….The President needs to realize that Eric Holder needs to be removed from the Department of Justice, or else then I believe President Obama is complicit and he [approves] of the actions of his Attorney General.”

As Joe Biden would say, this is a big bleeping deal.

Expect the Obama Administration to go into damage control mode, throw Holder under the bus (Melsen is pretty much a dead man walking at this point, politically-speaking) very, very soon. He can’t use his usual approach to problems–to give a nice speech and then petulantly grouse that the speech was not sufficient to fix the problem. This problem may not even go away with Holder’s departure–but his continued tenure, marked by a chronic incompetence and contempt for the rule of law, is no longer tenable.

This one is not going away. But let’s make sure of it.

That’s correct. Sometimes I feel like the proverbial Zen finger pointing at the moon. Not much talent for comprehensive posts. Aggregation with hopefully pithy comment, that’s my motto. Or it is now. 🙂

Thank you for your glorious graphic, Sir George. Awesome. 🙂
