The “I” Word: Project Gunwalker

“The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” –Art. II, Sec. 4.
“ATF Project Gunrunner [which began in 2005] has a stated official objective to stop the sale and export of guns from the United States into Mexico in order to deny Mexican drug cartels the firearms considered “tools of the trade”. However, since February 2008 under Project Gunrunner, Operations ‘Fast and Furious’, ‘Too Hot to Handle’, ‘Wide Receiver’ and others (all together satirically dubbed ‘Project Gunwalker’), have done the opposite by ATF permitting, encouraging and facilitating ‘straw purchase’ firearm sales to traffickers, and allowing the guns to ‘walk’ and be transported to Mexico [emphasis added].” (source)
“Weapons linked to the strategy have been turning up at dangerous and deadly crime scenes near both sides of the border, including the murder scene of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, who was killed last December.” (source)
The departure of acting ATF Director Ken Melson is a foregone conclusion. Under the bus for you, Kenny.
AG Eric Holder has of course disavowed any knowledge of what the program had become: “Holder’s office at first vehemently denied ATF has ever knowingly allowed weapons to get into the hands of suspected gunrunners for Mexico’s drug cartels….”
However, according to a speech in 2009, the text of which is posted on DOJ’s website, Holder said, “Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion.”
It will be interesting to see how the inevitable fall of these two nincompoops, a forgone conclusion if there ever was one, plays out, but the more riveting question seems to be:
What did Obama know and when did he know it?
All the above seems at least as egregious an abrogation of the Oath of Office as, say, lying under oath, or covering up a burglary, or doing an end-run around Congress to aid anti-communists.
I’ll leave it to others to speculate as to any anti-Second Amendment agenda that may be in play, but it wouldn’t very much surprise me if that was what drove this insane excuse for public policy.
